Founded in 1955, Arts Theatre of Singapore is one of the nation's longest-running Chinese-language theatre companies. What began as a group of passionate alumni from Chinese school drama societies has grown into a beloved institution.

In 1955, a group of passionate alumni from Chinese school drama societies — including Chung Cheng High School, Hwa Chong Institution, and Nan Qiao — came together with a shared dream: to keep Chinese-language theatre alive in Singapore.
They formed the Singapore Amateur Players, and their very first production was Cao Yu’s masterpiece "Sunrise" (日出) — a bold, ambitious debut that set the tone for decades of powerful Chinese drama to come.
What started as a labour of love by theatre enthusiasts has since evolved into one of Singapore’s longest-running Chinese-language theatre companies, touching the lives of hundreds of thousands of audience members over nearly seven decades.
